Did you know?

The Ogg format is named after a character "Nanny Ogg" from Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels! It was built as a patent-free alternative to MP3.

Bridge the Gap

Why Change Format?

OGG is technically superior, but MP3 wins on compatibility. Get the best of both worlds.

Universal Player

Most web browsers play OGG, but few offline players do. MP3 plays everywhere.

Metadata Saving

We intelligently translate Ogg Vorbis comments into ID3v2 tags so you keep your artist info.

Custom Bitrates

Choose from 64kbps to 320kbps. Balance file size vs quality perfectly.

Batch Processing

Converting game assets? Process whole folders quickly and efficiently.

"I use OGG for all my game assets. But when I need to send a preview to a publisher, I always use this to make an MP3."

Vorbis to LAME Pipeline

Open Source.
Universal Appeal.

OGG files, typically using the Vorbis codec, organize audio data into logical "pages" and "packets". This structure is vastly different from the frame-based architecture of MP3.

Our converter acts as a bridge. It first demuxes the Ogg container to access the raw Vorbis stream. Then, it decodes this stream into Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) audio.

Finally, this raw audio is piped into the LAME encoder, which recompresses it into MP3 frames at your selected bitrate (up to 320kbps), while simultaneously translating Vorbis Comments into ID3v2 tags.

Precision Demuxing

Page Demuxing

Extracts Vorbis packets from Ogg pages with bit-perfect accuracy.

Tag Translation

Maps 'VORBIS_COMMENT' fields to standard 'ID3v2' frames.

Legacy Support

Unlock audio from older games and open-source projects.

Understanding the OGG Format

OGG is not just an audio format; it's a multimedia container format. However, when people say "OGG file", they almost always mean audio compressed with the Vorbis codec. It was developed by the Xiph.Org Foundation as a patent-free alternative to MP3.

While MP3 uses constant frame sizes for data, OGG uses a more complex system of pages and packets. This allows it to be more efficient and sound better at lower bitrates.

Despite its technical superiority, MP3 won the popularity war. Converting to MP3 ensures your audio is playable on everything from a 2005 iPod Shuffle to the lattest Smart Fridge.

Audio Glossary

Vorbis

The specific audio compression method usually found inside .ogg files.

Container

The 'box' (OGG) that holds the audio stream (Vorbis). MP3 is both a container and a codec.

Lossy

Compression that throws away some audio data to save space. Both OGG and MP3 are lossy.

Bitrate

Data per second. 320kbps is the gold standard for high-quality MP3s.

Artifacts

Strange noises (swirling/gurgling) that appear when audio is compressed too much.

Xiph.Org

The non-profit organization that created the Ogg Vorbis format.

Conversion Tips

Renaming Files

Never just rename ".ogg" to ".mp3". It won't work. The internal data structure is completely different and must be re-encoded.

Multiple Conversions

Avoid converting OGG → MP3 → OGG back and forth. Each step degrades quality slightly ("generation loss").

Game Sounds

Many PC games use OGG for background music. You can use this tool to extract that music for personal listening.
